  Rule 1: the circumstances

The social kissing is“social”, not professional. In a working environment you shake hands (you may find the associated rules in our previous article here{商务社交礼仪}如何握手才能给对方留下良好的印象呢?) If a client, a colleague or your manager initiates a cheek-kissing with you it means your relations have reached a certain level, this person appreciates you personally and not only professionally. He or she wants to give you a form of privilege in the way of greeting you. I advise you to take it as an honour.

In a formal social environment, such as a ceremony, a gala, people would only practice the cheek-kissing with very close friends or relatives, and would still shake hands or do a head sign to greet the wife, husband or friends of these people if they don’t know them.

In a friendly or casual environment, the cheek kissing may happen even between people meeting each other for the first time.

  Rule 2: the gender

They may practice the social kissing with either women or men without gender restriction.

A man would get involved in cheek-kissing with another man under certain circumstances. First of all, close friends or men who are related: father to son, grand-father to grand-son, cousins, uncles and so on. The contrary would be considered as a lack of affection. Then, between people of a same community: sport team, homosexuals, some religious or associative circles. Here the cheek-kissing is a sign of recognition “we belong to the same group”.

In Arab countries, the cheek-kissing is only practiced between same genders: men to men, women to women, it would be inappropriate between a man and a woman.

  Rule 3: who initiates it?

As you may imagine, it has to come from the most senior person, who would like to show a special recognition to somebody from a lower position.

Traditionally, the rule was “a woman chooses the way she wants to be greeted”, thus initiates the cheek-kiss if any. Nowadays it is no longer so strict, a man could initiate it but should pay attention that this gesture couldn’t be wrongly interpreted.

  Rule 4: the kiss

Unlike its name, the cheek-kissing doesn’t involve a kiss with the lips pressed on the cheeks, that would be perceived as disgusting by the receiver, no matter the gender or the country of origin.

You press cheeks against cheeks, and do a light “smack” in the air. Beware, you need to do a light “smack” sound, not doing it would be a mistake.

  Rule 5: faux-pas to avoid

You may have seen it in some movies, the “air kiss”, people kissing each other without touching their cheeks. Avoid it, it would mean you find the other person disgusting, and get involved in the cheek kissing only because your have to.

Also don’t grab the two shoulders of the other person.

You need to be cheeks against cheeks, this is the proper way. You may also gently lay your right hand on the left shoulder of the other person, without grasping it firmly. Just a simple contact.

Rule 6: Which cheek first, how many kisses?

It actually depends from the country you are at. For instance, here is the map of France for the cheek which start first.

In most of the countries the right cheek goes first, but be prepared to give the left one first. See below for the specificities per countries.

Here again it depends: 1, 2, 3 or even 4 kisses and more depending on the country! Just for France there are many variations:

Generally in the world two or three kisses are the most common. To summarize, give the right cheek first and do 2 kisses, this is how you have the less chances to get wrong.

  Rule 7: World’s specificities

In Southern Europe, cheek-kiss as a way of greetings is extremely common, so be prepared! You start with the right cheek first in Spain and Portugal, the left in Italy and Greece, with 2 kisses. Eastern Europe is a region of kissers too, especially in Russia, with 2 or 3 kisses.

If you travel through Southern America, you will notice how frequent it is for people to greet each other with a cheek kiss. In southern countries like Argentina or Uruguay men also often practice the cheek-kiss.

The Arab world is also practicing the cheek-kissing, with many variations depending each countries.

In Northern Europe you will encounter few persons willing to do a cheek kiss with you. In the United-Kingdom it is not common, but it is starting to be fashionable in the middle and upper class. In Germany and Scandinavia, 2 persons who know each other very well might do it.

In the United-States and in the English-speaking part of Canada the cheek-kiss is not used, although it is getting more widespread due to the influence of movies and some Medias. In the French-speaking Canada you will do 2 kisses starting with the left cheek.

Excepting in Philippines and in some parts of Indonesia, the cheek kiss is not an appropriate way of greetings in Asia. On the contrary it is considered as an offensive, or even disgusting action in several Asian cultures.

If you are really disgusted by the cheek-kiss I can give you a very simple solution to avoid it: stretch your hand first!
